The movie that was selected to illustrate a high performance team in action was Armageddon which is directed by Michael Bay and stars Bruce Willis. Much of the material that we have studied illustrate that teams out perform individuals within an organization. This is most evident when performance requires multiple skills, judgments, and experiences (Katzenbach and Smith, 1993). In analyzing and comparing the characters and events in the movie, Armageddon, one sees many of the elements of a high performance team such as problem solving, goal setting, conflict resolution, and team dynamics. The goal was to drill to 800 feet and detonate the nuclear bomb. According to Wheelan (2010) groups containing three to six members are significantly more productive than larger groups. By dividing the team into two groups increased the likelihood for success because only one group needed to reach the goal of 800 feet and detonate the bomb for the world to be saved. The main group dynamic that was evident in this team was that once a clear objective was set everyone collaborated and worked earnestly for a solution. Once a solution was developed they all worked toward making it a reality. â€Å"The most important characteristic of a high-performance team is that its members are clear about the team’s goals† (Wheelan, 2010, p.41). Everything was fine when his father was away for war because Larry got all the attention and love from the mother. When the father returned from the war, Larry felt that he had to share his mother with his father and disliked that. Larry tries to disturb his father every morning climbing in the bed and making noise, â€Å" He was taking more than a fair share of the bed, and I couldn’t get comfortable so I gave him several kicks that made him grunt and stretch†(160). Mother was a victim when the father yelled at Larry for talking back. Mother cries, ‘â€Å"Mick, Mick! †Ã¢â‚¬â„¢(164). However, Larry has been victimized in many ways and more than the father, the mother and Sonny have been victimized. The first reason that Larry is victim is because his daily routine was changed suddenly. When his father was away, Larry spent a lot of time with his mother, â€Å"After breakfast we went into town; heard Mass at St. Augustine’s and said a prayer for a father, and did shopping† (159). He talked to her about his idea; she took him for a walk and prayed together. When Larry says, â€Å"After that I went into mother’s room and climbed into the big bed† indicates that every morning he quietly squeezed in his mother’s bed which was also his daily routine until his father came back from war (159). Everything changed for him after his father came back. His mother stopped taking him for a walk. When he went to his mother’s bed, his father was there. His mother said he had to stop coming to the bed. But she did not make it clear to him why he had to stop. Since he was just a child, he could not understand. So, he felt victimized when all these routines changed all of a sudden. The second reason Larry is a victim because he had poor parenting. When the father says, ‘â€Å"Shut up! You little puppy! †Ã¢â‚¬â„¢ shows that he does not care about the word he used in front of his son (164). Father should be very careful because Larry is just a child and he learns from what he hears and sees. But, he is least concerned, uses the harsh words and smacks him, â€Å"‘I see he’s better fed than taught,’. . . ‘He wants his bottom smacked. ’† Larry’s father should have been nice to him and made him understand in a different rather than using these harsh words and smacking him. Gripping my arms very tightly† shows that the mother holds Larry’s arms tightly instead of making him understand with love(163). She expects him to stay quiet when he is just a child. These behaviors of the parents shows that Larry had a poor parenting. Third reason Larry is a Victim because he was ignored. Mother didn’ t give Larry much attention when his father came back from war, â€Å"‘Do be quiet Larry! † she said impatiently. â€Å"Don’t you hear me talking to Daddy? †Ã¢â‚¬â„¢(159). â€Å"He got up early and made tea, but though he brought mother a cup he brought none for me. indicates that Larry’s father brought tea only for his mother and nothing for him (162). When his little brother Sonny was born, the mother had even less time for Larry and stopped taking him for walks and also smacked him for nothing, â€Å" She stopped taking me for walks, became as touchy as blazes, and smacked me for nothing at all† (166). To conclude Larry is the main victim in the story where his daily routine is changed, he is poor parented and is ignored. It is now recognized that Indian English literature is not only part of Commonwealth literature, but also occupies a great significance in the World literature. Today, a number of Indian writers in English have contributed substantially to modern English literature. Ram Mohan Roy who heralded the Indian Renaissance and Macaulay who recommended English language education in India were probably aware of what was in store for the Indians in terms of literary awareness. It is possible to see the connection here, if one remembers that by this decade the nationalist upsurge had stirred the whole country to the roots toa degree and on a scale unprecedented earlier, making it acutely conscious of its present and its past and filling it with new hopes for the future. A society compelled into self- awareness like this provides a fertile soil for fiction and it is no accident that the three major Indian English novelists- Mulk Raj Anand, R. K. Narayan and Raja Rao, came to light during this phase. It was, in fact, during this period that Indian English fiction discovered some of its most significant themes such as the ordeal of the freedom- struggle, East- West relationship, the communal problem and the plight of the untouchables, the landless poor, the economically exploited etc. The tradition of the novel of social portraiture set by RaJmohans Wife was considerably diversified in Indian English fiction acquired a respectable status and remarkable momentum consequent in the hands of Mulk Raj Anand, R. K. Narayan and Raja Rao are considered to be the pioneers trio of the Indian English novel, who started their riting career in the Gandhian age and still continued to write thereafter, brought the novel to maturity, the contribution of post-Independence novelists (especially the younger generation) cannot be underestimated. Collectively, the contribution of this generation novelists perhaps even preponderates over that of older generation novel and this is no overstatement. At the same time, it is indisputable that the younger generation novelists cannot be set beside Anand, Narayan and Rao, modern sensibility and technique, the new novelists would appear to have a distinct advantage. l, therefore, modestly differ from the statement of Professor M. K. Naik that the achievement of the post- Independence novelists cannot, on the whole, be said to match that of Anand and his two major contemporaries. The purpose of the paper is to highlight and emphasize the real merit of these three novelists and their contribution to Indian English fiction. Critics like William Walsh, Alstair Niven, K. R. S. lyengar, C. D. Narasimhaiah and M. K. Naik have evaluated the works of these great trio, and labeled them as: If Anand is the novelist as reformer, Raja Rao is the novelist as metaphysical poet, Narayan is the novelist as moral analyst, says William Walsh. C. D. Narasimhaiah says: Where distinctions are made they fall into neat categories of Anand the Marxist, progressive or committed writer; Narayan the comic genius or writer pure and simple; and Raja Rao the religious or philosophical novelist. These three novelists have broken new grounds in Indian English fiction in terms of making innovations in themes and techniques. They have re-created their characters in their own situations-social, as well as psychological. If Anand is known for humanism, Narayan is known for social and psychological realism and Rao for metaphysical ideas. It is interesting to know that our pioneering novelists, Anand and Narayan published their first nove ls with the help of British novelists, E. M. Forster and Graham Greene respectively. Narayan and Rao have many things in common. All the Big Three as William Walsh called them, were influenced by Gandhi and tried to make a myth around Gandhi in their novels. All these three lived abroad, and were exposed to western life and culture. Unlike diasporic writers they never thought of imaginary homeland they were firmly rooted in India. All of them won Sahitya Akademi Award for their novels R. K. Narayan for The Guide in 1960, Raja Rao for The Serpent and the Rope in 1963 home and abroad.
